Characteristics of Low Smoke Zero Halogen Cables

Zero halogen materials are materials that do not contain a group of halogen elements (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and astat). These fire elements release substances toxic to humans in the form of toxic fumes, but they also cause corrosion of metals. Halogen-free plastics are safer and products made from them are particularly convenient for collection and escape routes (public places, train stations, theaters, cinemas, shopping centers, etc.) PVC or PVC is not a halogen-free material because it contains chlorine.

Low smoke zero halogen cables are made of special thermoplastic sheaths. The use of thermoplastic or thermosetting compounds gives this insulation excellent fire retardancy. LSZH materials are most often used when both fire safety and reliability are critical, and LSZH cables are ideal for confined spaces where poor ventilation can be a serious problem.

"low Smoke" Feature

In dense urban areas where tunnels are filled with cable routes, fire can pose a significant risk. It is well known that the most dangerous component of a fire in its early stages is not flame, but smoke. In areas where ventilation is limited, the rapid accumulation of smoke can quickly lead to death and injury. Even where ventilation systems exist, smoke can significantly reduce visibility and can hide exits and escape routes.
LSZH is a low smoke sheathing material that produces virtually no smoke when exposed to fire. It consists of a thermoplastic compound that emits no or little white smoke when exposed to high temperatures, and LSZH cable has excellent physical and electrical insulation properties, as well as superior flame retardancy.

"Zero Halogen" Characteristics

The combustion of common sheathing materials can produce large amounts of toxic and/or corrosive gases. Most standard cable jackets contain halogens such as chlorine, bromine and iodine. When this sheathing material burns, it produces toxic chemical gases that are harmful to your health and can cause asphyxiation. These toxic gases can also combine with water, such as the water used by firefighters to extinguish fires or in the human respiratory tract, to form corrosive acids. Inhaling these toxic fumes can cause permanent damage to the throat and lungs and lead to complex respiratory problems.
On the other hand, the sheathing of LSZH cables does not contain halogens, so the amount of harmful gases and chemicals produced during combustion is much less. Although some gases are still released when the jacket material is exposed to high temperatures, these gases are non-toxic and do not produce corrosive fumes. Another benefit is that LSZH cables are made from materials that are environmentally friendly.
