Like other sectors, the glass industry is facing the major challenge of acting more sustainably and drastically reducing its carbon footprint. Ambitious efforts are underway and RATH places great emphasis on supporting the glass industry in its efforts. Thus, the Austrian refractories manufacturer, who operates internationally, attaches great importance to continuous research and development – be it innovative products for refractory linings or hot gas filter elements to filter particle-laden industrial flue gases in industrial plants. A recent example of this: FOURATH®4, a new, advanced feeder expendables series, based on an optimized formulation that has been exclusively developed and produced by RATH.
During the R&D process, RATH selected the highest quality raw materials to keep the impurity level to a minimum and achieve the lowest possible glass corrosion, infiltration, devitrification, and blistering rate. To be more competitive on the market, the entire manufacturing process was converted from clay-bonded slipcasting to chemically bonded vibrocasting. This brings some significant advantages to RATH customers. First of all, the product quality is improved, with better corrosion, infiltration and devitrification resistance, better thermal shock and crack resistance, and longer service life due to a more compact mix, better surface quality, significantly lower porosity and higher CCS. Secondly, the new manufacturing technology avoids additional grinding of the tube’s outer surface while maintaining the tight tolerances. “This enables us to increase the service life of the tube and significantly reduce cracking in the tube by eliminating the micro-crack formulation during machining,” Robert Nusszer, Head of Sales Glass, RATH Group, says. In cooperation with several customers, FOURATH®4 has successfully passed the first trials in glassworks over the last 2-3 years. “Customer feedback on theproduct performance of the FOURATH®4 series confirms its high level of efficiency and quality in glass production,” Nusszer adds.
RATH expert lecture: How to maximize the service life of feeder expendables
Robert Nusszer, Head of Sales Glass, will explain in his expert lecture at Glassman Latin America how the service life of feeder expendables can be maximized from a refractory perspective. The presentation of the proven expert on refractories for the glass industry will also provide recommendations on how to avoid typical installation errors which cause machine downtimes. Due to high productivity, minimizing machine downtimes has the highest priority in the container glass industry.
Ready for the future with ceramic hot gas filter elements
RATH also helps the glass industry to meet the highest emission protection requirements in industrial plants: Hot gas filtration is becoming increasingly important here. For many years, the company has been developing innovative ceramic hot gas filter elements that make it possible to filter particle-laden industrial flue gases at temperatures up to °C and reduce emissions of nitrogen and sulfur oxides, as well as reduce the emission of fine particulates. RATH ceramic hot gas filters are produced in Europe using RATH fibers and available in lengths from 1 to 6 meters.

"Early removal of dust from particulate-contaminated exhaust gases at high temperatures is a requirement that makes sense, not only from an ecological but also from an economic point of view. The use of RATH ceramic filter cartridges leads to a better energy balance as there is no need to down- and up-regulate the exhaust gas temperature. Uneconomical cooling of exhaust gases solely for filtering is no longer necessary, which also saves costs", summarizes Robert Nusszer and adds: "Purified hot gas can also be used for other applications, for example to generate energy or hot water. This is another decisive advantage."

Containers
Feeder expendables
We offer a wide range of expendable refractory parts including orifice rings, stirrers, feeder tubes, spouts and plungers for container glass manufacturers. Our refractory parts withstand high temperature environments and thermal shock.
They are mainly manufactured by slip cast process, but also by vibrocast processes. The selection and usage of reliable raw materials is a priority and the base of our quality and efficiency.
We are devoted to help our customers, when individual product design is needed we specialize in custom refractory product development.
With expendables fast response is imperative, we understand the commitment. We have high flexibility and service with the best proven lead times.
Z-11
Material with good thermal shock resistance. Zircon refractory recommended for feeder tubes, orifice rings, plungers and stirrers working with any type of glass .
Z-20
Ideal for applications requiring thermal shock resistance and excellent working properties. Recommended for feeder tubes, orifice rings and spouts in special glasses at high operating temperatures.
Z-30
Material with high zircon content and excellent corrosion resistance.
Recommended in applications where extended life is desired.
Mullite-V
Material with excellent thermal stability and resistance to abrasion. Recommended in numerous applications in the glass industry, ceramics, chemical and steel processing.
Orifice ring assemblies
Additional gasket, packing clay and stainless steel orifice ring holder can be supplied. These parts can be purchased individually or as complete matched assemblies.
Orifice ring holder
Made in one piece from casted stainless steel. Machined inside and outside, in single, double, triple and quadruple gob; as well as, elliptical exit. We also have options of stainless steel punched in one piece, two pieces in stainless steel, combination with carbon steel or 100% carbon steel.
Gaskets
Dimensional design according to the refractory orifice and its holder, with remarkable performance due to coating that avoids volatilities. Seals between the orifice ring and the spout. It is a clean and efficient alternative available in a range of diameters.
Refractory clay
This product allows a good packing as well as a certain porosity to eliminate excess moisture.
