To summarize, the whole process takes place on rolling mills that are calibrated to generate rings of various sizes. Typically, the outer diameter spans from a couple of inches up to 300 inches. Weight-wise, these rolled rings could weigh anywhere from 1 lb to over 300,000lbs, depending upon the requirements.

In the primary stages of this process, the raw material is also known as ‘ingot,’ ‘billet,’ or simply ‘stock,’ is set between a flat dies after being heated to high temperatures where it behaves almost like a plastic, thus making it easier to give it any preferred shape.

Thereafter, the centre is punched through-and-through to create a ring rolling ‘donut.’ Since the ‘ingot’ is maintained at hot temperatures, the displacement of the metal in the middle takes place radially.

Moving ahead, ID and OD pressures are applied to the ring consecutively increasing the ring diameter. This goes on until the desired ring diameter is achieved after which, the seamless rolled rings forging process comes to an end.

Multiple shapes & sizes:

What gives seamless rolled rings a definite shape is a ‘shaping tool.’Using this tool, the forged rings can be given any shape or size, from cylindrical to washer-like parts.

What materials are used in this process?

Basically, it depends on the unique requirements of each client.While stainless steel or an alloy of iron ore are highly preferred, titanium, aluminium and other metals or alloys are not too far behind.

Regardless the metal or alloy used, the remaining process stays the same. But of course, special considerations are made for shaping, sizing, heating or cooling the metals since each has a distinct heating and cooling temperatures.
