PVC Edgebanding vs laminate - WOODWEB's Cabinetmaking Forum

We do commercial millwork in Canada. Wondering if most people use plam for edgebanding on their plastic laminate doors? or if they use PVC (either 3mm, 2mm 1mm etc)

Check now

Also what do you do if you cant find a match or the thickness you need?

We currently use mostly laminate on the edges and its so time consuming. Wondering if architects allow you to use PVC and if anyone has figured out how to get around matching problems, or thickness availability.

Thanks

85% of the time pvc on commercial jobs if no match is available then laminate. If the customer specs 1,2 or 3mm hopefully you have done there home work and if it not available you rfi it before the bid and get clarification. It only sucks if you didn't account for the labor when you bid a job.

Similar to Tracy, we use PVC when ever we can. 3mm does not clean up as easy as .18 PVC and laminate can chip.

If we do use laminate, we lay up a panel with the backer laminate, white etc, cut the sizes, edge our doors and drawer fronts and then glue the laminate on the face to avoid the dark line. Then we have to hand route and clean up the laminate.

Obviously, we try to avoid laminate edges. Laminate edges can chip as well.

I'm with Larry, but we use a tom of .018 due to peoples budgets Once you get a good bander, I am sure you will wonder how in the hell you stayed with laminate stripping and edging

I once paid a upcharge for custom pvc banding and for a .00 job It was worth every penny to allow the time it would have took to strip and prime the plam then apply it. We have applied p-lam by machine, but the stopping and reloading is not fast by any means compared to the 300 ft or 600 ft rolls of banding
