Slotted liners, wired-wrapped screens, woven / mesh screens and pre-packed screens are common screen choices. Slotted liners usually have uniformly spaced slots. The slot width can vary depending on the particular application and gravel size. Seive analysis and particle size distribution data from core samples needs to be considered to determine the slot width range. Typical method is to use a screen opening equal to or less than the largest size (D10) of the formation sand from a sieve analysis or a particle size analysis. However, some smaller particles may flow through the screen prior to the time where the larger particles have time to bridge on the screen opening. This criteria is not recommended in cases where there are a lack of production facilities to handle the particles, or when the smaller particles may cause erosion or where there is a subsea pipe line that may become filled or partially filled with the produced particles. Hence, the best method of sizing the screen openings would be to test various screen types and screen openings using the specific sand formulation that needs to be filtered. Standard SAS slot opening sizes are 125 microns, 175 microns and 250 microns. Slotted liners are the least expensive option and have low inlet-flow capabilities which make them popular for scenarios with long completion intervals and low-productivity formations. Wire-wrapped screen has a uniform gauge between the wires to bridge sand particles on the outside of the screen. Wire-wrapped screens provide a large flow capacity which makes them ideal for most high-rate applications. When wired-wrapped screens are not economical, slotted-liners become the preferred choice. In some formations with poorly sorted formation sands (3< UC < 5) and high fines content (< 5%), a premium mesh screen is an ideal choice. The superior filtration provided by multilayers aids in solids retention and plugging resistance. This type of screen is more capital-intensive than all other options. Pre-packed screens can be used when gravel placement is an issue. This type of screen is fabricated using resincoated sand between two concentric wired screens. Although these screens have demonstrated good sand control capabilities when combined with gravel packs, they are much more easily plugged with formation fines for stand-alone applications.
